What Can You Do in Gujo Hachiman? Indigo Dyeing, Cycling and Otaki Cave

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who have a day or two in Gujo Hachiman and want to know what the official pages suggest. It uses four English pages of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), plus the Japanese top page of the Gujo Hachiman tourist site, summarised here in English. All pages were read on 2026-10-04.

The short answer

The tourist site describes Gujo Hachiman as a mountain town in the middle of Gifu Prefecture. From JNTO's pages, four things stand out: the castle town and its dyeing tradition, a river-side cycling route, a guided countryside e-bike tour and a limestone cave south of the centre.

The castle and the museum

The tourist site says Gujo Hachiman Castle was rebuilt in 1933 (Showa 8) and has watched over the castle town for more than 90 years since. It also describes the Hakurankan, a museum in a former tax office from the Taisho era, divided into sections on water, history, craft and the Gujo Odori. The site says the Odori demonstrations there are held only on limited days and times.

Indigo dyeing in the castle town

JNTO says Gujo Hachiman has been a centre of Japanese indigo dyeing since the 16th century. It describes a dyehouse that continues a family tradition of natural indigo, which it says has insect-repelling and antibacterial properties, to create a blue called Japan Blue. With an English interpreter, a master craftsman helps you dye a t-shirt or scarf, and you can choose fabric, pattern and colour gradient. While the cloth dries you can add a guided walk past the preserved historic buildings, the reconstructed castle and the gardens of Jionzen-ji Temple.

Cycling by the Nagara River

JNTO describes a 22-kilometre rental bicycle tour that starts at Gujo-Hachiman Station of the Nagaragawa Railway and follows the Nagara River, which it says is named one of the clearest-flowing rivers in Japan. The route passes an ancient Japanese cedar, a local railway photo spot and a shrine, and a stop for daifuku sweet rice cakes. It ends at a hot spring resort. Local guides also offer an Old City Tour of temples, shrines and tea houses.

A guided e-bike day in the countryside

A second JNTO page describes a private e-bike journey in Gujo City, a short distance from the historic town, in a satoyama landscape, a place where people and nature live in harmony. The programme passes rice fields and clear rivers, and includes meeting local farmers, visiting a tofu maker who uses mountain spring water, and stepping into a historic sake brewery. Hands-on food experiences include making local sushi. The page also traces To Tsuneyori, a 15th-century warlord and poet. This is a guided tour, so it needs booking through the organiser.

Otaki Limestone Cave

JNTO says the largest network of caves in the region lies south of the town centre, and that Otaki is the most accessible. There are no direct public transport links, and a taxi from Gujo Hachiman Station takes around 20 minutes. The cave is well lit, but water makes the rock slippery and it can be cold inside, so dress accordingly. The 700 metres open to the public takes about 30 minutes to walk, and the end is marked by a 30-metre waterfall. JNTO adds that many of the stalactites are named for the shapes they resemble, such as "Decorated Cake".

Planning a day

The tourist site describes a one-day railway coupon that also includes admission tickets for the museum and the castle. It says the coupon is meant for getting off the Nagaragawa Railway along the way to stroll the town. It also describes town guides who help visitors enjoy the castle town, and dance classes taught by preservation society members. The pages do not give prices or booking rules for the guides or the classes, so ask the tourist office first.
